Xbox Games with Gold for October
Another good month for us Xbox owners with some top quality free shit! On the Xbone we get 2 decent titles spread out over the month and one of them i’ve been meaning to play for months but haven’t got round too yet. It’s a sign of the improved offering every month that i’ve actually held off buying full games to fill in the wait until Halo 5 and ROTR launches in the next 2 months. I’ll be playing lots of The Walking Dead and will of course share my personal journey through what is by all accounts an emotional roller coaster of a Game.
Let’s get started
Valiant Hearts: The Great War – From the wiki as i have no idea about this game
Valiant Hearts: The Great War is a puzzle adventure video game developed by Ubisoft inspired by letters written during the World War 1. Valiant Hearts has four characters a Frenchman Emile, his German son-in-law Karl, American soldier Freddie, and Belgian nurse Anna.on the battlefield help a young German soldier find his love in this story about survival, sacrifice and friendship.
The game comprises four chapters split into several sections, with each section requiring the player to clear an objective in order to progress through the story, most of which generally involve solving puzzles by obtaining certain items needed for the situation. Other sections include wartime segments requiring the player to survive heavy gunfire, stealth sections where the player must avoid being detected by enemies, and rhythmic car chase sections set to classic songs. Each character is able to interact with objects, perform a melee attack to knock out guards or smash through debris, and aim and throw projectile objects such as bricks or grenades. There are also some traits unique to each character. Emile has a shovel which lets him dig through soft ground, Freddie carries shears which can be used to cut through barbed wire, and Anna is able to treat patients for injuries, which requires the player to press buttons with precise timing.
Additionally, players can issue various commands to a dog named Walt, who is able to squeeze into small areas, hold onto and fetch certain items, activate switches, and move around without being suspected by the enemy. The game features optional collectible items hidden in each segment, facts about the real-life war that are unlocked as the game progresses, and a hint system the player can use if they are stuck on a section for a certain amount of time
The Walking Dead
TellTale games have built themselves a solid reputation of building excellent story driven Games from the likes of Game of Thrones that i had a great time playing through. Despite loving The Walking Dead series i’ve yet to get started on this series so i’m super glad to see Series one coming free next month from 16 October till 15 November. The game is very much an extension of the Television Series wrapped around TellTale Games love of cinematic, choice driven gameplay.
The Wiki has this to say about the story spoilers removed of course
The game opens with Lee Everett on his way to prison after his conviction in Atlanta, Georgia. In route, the deputy sheriff’s car in which he is travelling strikes a walker and careens off-road. The officer is killed in the crash, and Lee takes shelter in a nearby home, discovering a little girl named Clementine hiding in her tree house. Her parents went away for a few days to Savannah, when the zombie apocalypse began. Lee offers to protect and care for Clementine, and help her find them.
They then travel to a nearby farmstead, owned by Hershel Greene, where Lee is introduced to Kenny, his wife Katjaa and their son Kenny Jr. (nicknamed “Duck”). When Shawn, Hershel’s son, is lost to a walker attack, Hershel banishes the group from his home. Lee and Clementine join Kenny and head towards Macon. There, they find shelter with several other survivors in a drugstore that had been owned by Lee’s family. While trying to recover medicine from the pharmacy, they set off the alarm and are forced to abandon the store, finding safety in a motel with a defensible perimeter.
One of the key characters throughout the series is Clementine a young 8-year-old girl living with her parents in an Atlanta suburb until the Zombie Apocalypse of course. Clementine forms a strong bond with the playable character Lee Everett and it’s around those two the game revolves and finds it’s all important emotional core.
The 360 has Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes and the Full first season of The Walking Dead so no feeling let out for those yet to make the leap to the Xbone.
I’ve been pretty critical of the Game with Gold program i’ve often felt it falls far short of the PS4 equivalent but Tomb Raider, MG5 and now The Walking Dead coming in subsequent months it’s a very promising sign that the quality bar has been raised considerably. Fingers crossed Microsoft keep the good work up throughout Xmas and into 2016.
