Halo 5: Guardians The Chief is Dead?
Last night Microsoft released a brief Halo 5 trailer onto it’s Youtube channel entitled “A Hero Falls” & as you can guess from the title is appears to reference the death of Spartan 117 in combat.This isn’t the first time the Death of the Master has been teased for Halo 5 in fact the last major Trailer ended with The Chief laying wounded at the feet of Spartan Locke with a Pistol aimed at his head.
Does this mean an end for one of video gamings most enduring figures? Watch the trailer and carry on reading i have a few ideas!
I hope you enjoyed this rather tantalising glimpse into a possible ending for Halo 5 and in typical Halo style it raises more questions than it answers. Hopefully i can provide a few possible answers to the many questions surrounding Halo 5 Guardians and the fate of Spartan 117
Does this spell the end for The Master Chief?
Whilst the trailer clearly shows Spartan 117 laying under a pile of rubble and finishes with his Visor powering off seemingly dead i don’t think this is actually the case. I see it playing out 1 of 3 ways which I’ll list and explain below
ONI faked the death of Spartan 117 to take attention away from the growing sense of unrest surrounding the abduction of children for the Spartan project.
In the Halo universe The Master Chief is a symbol of hope and strength that has become bigger than the rest of ONI and the UNSC. He is regarded as Humanities saviour and as such occupies a special place in the Human War effort making him in effect Larger than life. For those who listened to the “Hunt the truth” web series ONI attempted to Frame The Chief placing him at the site of a mass shooting even going to such lengths as to forge footage implicating him in several deaths of high ranking diplomatic officials. Obviously this was faked and was the source of a large part of the “Hunt the Truth” campaign.
Locke fakes the Death of Spartan 117 allowing him to go off the Radar to search for Cortana and stop the Guardians.
This is my personal opinion as i believe Locke will most likely take the reigns of the series once the Chief completes his mission. I can see Locke and The Master Chief coming face to face and Locke is shown the ONI plot and the severity of the threat from The Guardians. Locke aids The Chief in his mission whilst informing ONI that The Chief is dead ending the man hunt for him and putting him totally off the grid and out of the reach of ONI.
The Chief is dead long live Spartan Locke
The final possibility is 343 have decided to really kill off The Chief and move the series forward with Spartan Locke and Fire Team Osiris. I would be very surprised if this was correct but it is a way for 343 to reboot the series and take it in a new direction. Personally i think they are more likely to have a Locke based spin off project or The Chief is going to kill him.
343 are being very brave with the Marketing for Halo 5 and building the suspense ahead of it’s release next month. Plenty more shocks in store no doubt so sit back and enjoy the ride. It’s going to get bumpy
