Elite: Dangerous Launch Date Revealed
Nerds rejoice the quite possibly brilliant Elite: Dangerous is due to leave the Xbox One Game Preview program and heading for a full release on October 6th. Why is this such good news you may ask well chaps and chappettes the game is brilliant fun and a real shot in the arm for the Xbox One. It’s genuinely something that we haven’t played on console before & even in the preview builds I’ve played it was really good fun, incredibly deep and full to the brim with nerdy potential.
For anyone who hasn’t played it yet and chances are that’s 99% of the people reading this Elite: Dangerous is a space based MMO accurately modelled on the entire Milky way giving us more than 400 Billion star systems. The first Elite was released in the early 80’s and was one of the first true open world games all be it with the inherent technological limitations of early hardware.
Without those early limitations Elite: Dangerous brings this deep gameplay bang up to date. As is typical in MMO type games the player starts with a small starship and a few quid and sets out exploring the enormous Galaxy that is open from day 1. Your task is to survive and upgrade your ship through mining, exploring, smuggling and trading. Form alliances and conquer Star Systems or just play it like a futuristic pirate. Of course I played it like Captain Malcolm Reynolds, goes without saying really but I really enjoyed the freedom of that massive universe. I spent hours just exploring with no real purpose and found the controls very slick and easy to grasp.
As I was playing an early preview of the game it was relatively empty and free of players but the potential is obvious. That huge, connected world when played with friends is yours to mine, explore and plunder that is a pretty fucking awesome thought.
